Occidozyga

Puddle Frogs

Currently there are twelve recognized species of Occidozyga in Asia (ASW). A common character (synapomorphy) seems to be the predatory larvae that lack oral keratodonts and possess a horse-shoe like lower lip.

All species are small to medium sized frogs. Their distribution ranges over Southern China, Thailand, Malaya, Vietnam, Philippines, Greater and Lesser Sunda Islands including Flores.

Traditionally few species have been recognized for the island of Borneo. However, a study of our team (Flury et al. 2021) demonstrated genetic lineage diversity in Sarawak and Sabah. It is doubtful that all of these lineages represent separately evolving species but the species count for Occidocyga from Borneo will unquestionably increase one more scientific evidence emerges.
