Kaloula:
pulchra
Banded Bullfrog
Kaloula pulchra is an introduced species, having been brought to Borneo by human activity in relatively recent times. It is common in other parts of Southeast Asia. Unsurprisingly, this species is most frequently found in coastal agricultural areas and is gradually spreading inland.
It occurs in open habitats near agricultural fields, rice paddies, ponds, roadside ditches, golf courses, and hotel resorts. It tolerates human disturbance very well and benefits from anthropogenic environments. It is not found deep within forested areas. Females may exceed 70 mm in snout–vent length (SVL), while males are typically smaller.
The species is present even in metropolitan areas, where its calls can be heard in large cities. The common name “bullfrog” refers to the deep, loud calls of the males. K. pulchra may emerge in large numbers following heavy rainfall. Tiny eggs are laid in shallow water, with the clutch floating as a surface film. The larvae are similar in body proportions to those of K. baleata, but differ in color pattern. Tadpoles can reach a total length of approximately 40 mm.
