Limnonectes

meratusensis

Meratus’ Creek Frog

Limnonectes meratusensis has been described as by Gonggoli et al. (2025) from Gunung Meratus, Batang Alai Timur District, Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency, South Kalimantan Province, Indonesia, at 568 m a.s.l. The altitudinal range was given as 568–1299 m a.s.l.

So far, Limnonectes meratusensis has been found only in the Meratus Mountains of southeastern Kalimanten, Indonesia, where it occurs sympatrically with two close relatives, L. maanyanorum and L. nusantara; in fact in syntopy with the latter in some localities. All three species have fully webbed toes. Distinguishing characters are: while the backs and tibia (shank) of L. maanyanorum and L. nusantara are covered with numerous warts, L. meratusensis is smoother and with less warts on the tibia .

Genetic analyses show that Limnonectes meratusensis is more closely related to L. cintalubang than to other members of the L. "kuhlii" species complex. This is a medium-sized frog, with males measuring 45–65 mm in snout–vent length and females 43–62 mm.

It differs from other Limnnoctes species in a combination of  characters: The eardrum is indistinct. The toes are fully webbed toes. It has a pair of prominent humps on the head. The skin on the back is relatively smooth, marked with a radiating network of fine wrinkles. The base of the tibia has only a few small, scattered warts. The second finger is longer than the first. There is no pale pineal spot on the top of the head. Males have a nuptial pad covered with minute rough asperities. Females have relatively short heads, accounting for just 37.4–40.9% of their snout–vent length. The webbing on the inner and outer edges of the fourth toes is moderately cut back.

The back is brown with a reddish tint and exhibits a distinctive double-band pattern. The head has a broad interorbital bar. Upper and lower lips bear three dark bars. The throat is heavily mottled in dark brown. The supratympanic fold (above eardrum) and canthus (edge between nostril and eye) covered by one dark band. The finger tips are gray above. The limbs are marked dorsally with dark crossbars. The abdomen is partly semi-translucent, covered by cream and light gray blotches. The thigh underside is cream but nearly completely covered by light gray blotches.

In the original description observation on vocalization were shared: Some males could be recorded calling from shallow water in a shallow small stream. "The frog emitted a sound like barking, “wwiikkk.....wekkk...wekkk...wekkk.” (Gonggoli et al. 2025).
